Country music artist from the first season of The Voice on NBC, Jared Blake, is using his own life experiences to spread the message about the dangers of drinking and driving. Jared is using his platform for good by allowing children, teens, and adults to become educated on drug and alcohol addiction prevention. After surviving a head-on collision with a drunk driver and battling drug addiction of his own, Jared formed the Live To Be Campaign, which empowers America’s youth to make positive choices and keep drugs and alcohol out of their path.
On May 9th, Jared and his wife Jennifer were in a head-on collision with a drunk driver going 60 miles per hour. Even though everybody survived, Jennifer suffered a fractured spine and other injuries. “It was terrifying and I still feel like this was all a dream. I only remember a horrible burning smell and burning throats and screaming to get out of the vehicle. Jared somehow got out and bent my door open to lay me on the ground. I couldn’t move but just stared at the stars knowing my eyes were open and I could hear so I was alive,” said Jennifer. Also, it was announced on The Voice that Jared was a drug addict at one point in his life, so he has experienced these problems first-hand. His reach on social media allowed a variety of people to learn about his story and learn from it.
Live To Be
Through his Live To Be Campaign, Jared Blake travels to different schools across the United States to speak to students about the importance of living a drug and alcohol-free life. He combines a “living above” approach and S.A.F.E. (Stopping Addiction with Family Education) to create a campaign that strives to help our nation’s youth. His “living above” approach encourages students to create an “end goal” for themselves while showing them how drugs and alcohol can deviate them away from that end goal, and the S.A.F.E. program helps families become educated on alcohol and drug addiction prevention. These two components in conjunction with each other shape students all across America into happy, healthy individuals.
Since Jared has six children of his own, he understands the power of educating young people about the dangers of drugs and alcohol from a very young age. That’s why his program targets such a young audience; starting young is the first step for preventing addiction later in life. Jared’s fun and cool personality shine through his campaign which makes it easier for him to reach young people in an entertaining way. Since people can hear the message same message over and over again such as, “don’t drink and drive,” it might not have the same effect on people over time. But Jared’s hip, fun, and cool message promote the same idea in a more entertaining way.
“Live to Be is a concept that empowers today’s youth to ‘fill in the blank’ with their own goal for life. The program provides discussions to help teens dig deep within their own desires to gain a positive focus on life while fighting doubt, confusion, hopelessness, and peer pressure.” Jared promotes the idea that our youth have the power to steer clear of temptations by staying on the path they have set for themselves. “Am I doing what’s best? Am I being the person I want to be? I know that I have the power.” These are just some of the quotes that are used in Jared Blake’s Live To Be Campaign. Kids usually feel that they are being told what to do, but Jared makes them realize that they can actually make a choice.
